Fall sports teams from the area that qualified for postseason tournaments have now ended their seasons, with varying degrees of success.

The cross country team at Mount St. Joseph Academy had an excellent outcome, starting with an easy victory in the Catholic Academies meet. At the PIAA District 1 championships at Lehigh University on October 27, MSJ senior Ella Woehlcke placed second overall with a time of 17:47.9. It was the fifth-best time recorded in Pennsylvania this fall. The Magic finished third as a team in Class AAA, the division that includes the largest public schools.

That performance earned the Mount a spot in the PIAA State Championships, which took place in Hershey on November 4. On the more difficult Hershey Parkview course, a time of 18:36.0 netted fifth place overall for Woehlcke, who will continue on to the University of Virginia.

The Magic were the fourth-place team in the standings, the best outcome of any team from Southeastern Pa. The Mount's number two runner all season, Katie Westmoreland (whose main sport is lacrosse), placed 58th in the field of 237 athletes.

Freshman Charli Schoen, a Norwood Fontbonne Academy grad, was third for the Mount and 67th overall. The other scorers for the Magic were sophomore Sarah Hock (116th) and freshman Annie Seminack (128th). Also running for Mount St. Joe's were junior Grace Daly (199th) and freshman Gianna Howe (202nd).

In volleyball, Germantown Academy added to its 2023 Inter-Ac League title by winning its first-ever Pa. Independent Schools championship (see story above).

In boys' soccer, 11th-seeded Germantown Academy was defeated in the first round of the Pa. Independent Schools (PAIS) tournament, but both Penn Charter (the seventh seed) and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (eighth) reached the quarterfinals.

There, each team was matched up against a 2022 finalist. Penn Charter travelled to Chester County and succumbed to second-seeded Phelps School, 3-0. SCH drew defending state champ Kiski School, and thus had to trek out to Pittsburgh last Tuesday. Senior Peter Shea put in a goal for the Blue Devils with an assist from sophomore Pat Donahue, but Kiski won 2-1.

In the PAIS girls' soccer tournament, defending champion SCH received a bye as the fourth seed this year, while GA and Penn Charter won first-round games to join the Blue Devils in the quarterfinals.

The Patriots bowed out with a 10-0 loss to the second seed, Westtown School, while SCH topped Penn Charter in another quarterfinal [see separate article]. The Blue Devils wrapped up their season in the semifinals, playing on the road against top-seeded Episcopal Academy.

Although junior Lida Goloveyko put one in the net for SCH, Episcopal won the match, 2-1.

After a successful performance in the District 1 Class AA field hockey tournament, Mount St. Joe's went into the PIAA state tournament as the district's third seed. In their opening game last Tuesday, the Magic faced Northern York High School from District 3 and prevailed, 4-3. Sophomore Katie Tropiano scored the first goal and the other three all came from freshman Caitlin Paul. Senior Caitlin Keough and sophomore Nora Massella were credited with assists.

This moved the Magic into a quarterfinal match with a very familiar opponent, Catholic Academies rival Villa Maria. The Hurricanes eliminated the Mounties, 4-1, with the Magic's goal coming from Keough.

Springside Chestnut Hill was seeded fifth and Germantown Academy was sixth in the PIAS field hockey tournament, which began with the quarterfinal round. The GA Patriots succumbed to third-seeded Agnes Irwin, 5-0.

The Blue Devils ended their run with a 3-1 loss to the fourth-seed, Episcopal Academy. Senior Kerry O'Donnell scored off an assist by junior Devyn Conlan. Conlan's twin sister Colleen, the SCH goalie, recorded her 600th career save in the game.
