The Art Center, founded in 1953, offers programs spanning visual arts, theater and educational initiatives for residents of all ages with four core programs – summer camp, classes, performances and exhibitions.
The Art Center's mission focuses on building understanding and unity among Northwest Philadelphia neighborhoods through accessible and transformative art education and experiences. The goal aligns with Historic Germantown's commitment to fostering community connection through cultural heritage.
The coalition of cultural organizations was formed in 2012 in a merger of the Germantown Historical Society and an earlier consortium of Historic Germantown, then an association of museums and historic houses.
Allens Lane Art Center is currently involved in a community engagement project called "Art Forward," funded by the William Penn Foundation. The initiative aims to uncover what residents of Mt. Airy and Germantown find most meaningful in arts and culture, with the goal of creating an arts education plan for the neighborhoods.
