Northwest Philadelphia’s Save the Train coalition of civic organizations is boarding a train to Harrisburg for its next rally on Monday, March 18, where it plans to advocate for improved funding for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA).
The day will kick off with a press event featuring state Sen. Art Haywood and numerous visits to state legislators. Participants will gather at 30th Street Station for a 7:25 a.m. departure on Amtrak to Harrisburg, aiming to address the critical $200 million budget shortfall SEPTA faces before June 30. This shortfall threatens significant service cuts across the network, including the Chestnut Hill West and East lines, and the 23 bus route. The coalition will advocate for funding Gov. Josh Shapiro’s proposed budget, which includes $282.8 million in new state money for public transit, with $161 million earmarked for SEPTA.
Anyone needing to catch the Amtrak train from 30th Street Station should board the Chestnut Hill West Regional Rail line at 5:51 a.m. to arrive at 30th Street by 6:23 a.m. The return trip on Amtrak is scheduled for 3:08 p.m., arriving back in Philadelphia by 4:58 p.m.
To join the effort and help prevent a downward spiral of service cuts and declining ridership, RSVP is necessary. Organizers are hoping for a big turnout, and there is financial assistance available for anyone who wants to come but can’t afford the $70 plus tax round-trip fare.
