With the regular season in girls' golf already nearing its conclusion, Mount St. Joseph Academy continues to glide through the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies and will send a large contingent of players into the PIAA District I tournament.

Last Monday at a district qualifying event, no fewer than seven Mounties made the cut to earn a spot in the individual District I championships. Players needed an 18-hole score of 99 or lower to meet the standard at Spring Hollow Golf Club in Chester County.

Sophomore Olivia Wirsching paced the Magic with an 83, and just one stroke behind were senior Maya Trujillo and freshman Clare Gimpel, each turning in a round of 84. Trujillo gave a plucky performance as she battled her way back to that figure after making 15 strokes on the first two holes.

Senior Grace Quinones came to the clubhouse with an 88 and junior Brianna Mahon produced an 89, while matching scores of 93 were the tickets to the tournament for junior Lia Priolo and senior Olivia Brogan. Brogan and Trujillo are Mount St. Joe's team captains this year.

During the previous week, the Mounties had raised their Catholic Academies match record to 9-0, with three contests remaining on the schedule. Once those bouts are played, the annual AACA tournament will take place.

On September 16, two days before the recent District 1 qualifier, the MSJ squad headed up the Schuylkill to the Spring Ford Golf Classic at Linfield National Golf Club. The Mount players, divided into two teams, were among 90 athletes making the circuit of the par 71 course. The Magic's Team 1 was victorious, and Team 2 placed above half of the other schools in attendance.

Mount St. Joe produced both the low sophomore score and the low freshman score thanks to Wirsching, with a 78, and Gimpel, with an 80. On a par- three hole, Brogan earned the "Closest to the Pin" award. Mount coaches John Mischler and Jules Quinones were also pleased with the performance of freshmen Sofia Gambone, Reilly Kelley and Sarah Spears, who were facing non-AACA competition for the first time.
