On Saturday, September 16, Germantown Friends Varsity Boys Cross Country decisively won the 65th Annual George School Invitational for the third year in a row. The Tigers were led by seniors Zach Goldberg (second place, 16:41.17), Colin Riley (third place, 16:49.18), Tim Peterson (fifth place, 17:07.53) and Alexander Blaylock (14th place, 17:36.47).

Junior, Miles Gomez-Younkin placed 23rd with a time of 17:57.39 to round out the top five finishers for the GFS harriers. The Tigers’ strength continued as their sixth and seventh runners, Henry Zeigler (31st place, 18:19.65) and Noah Anninger (37th place, 18:30.44), both juniors, outpaced over 100 other runners in the varsity race.

GFS had a total score of 47 with the next closest finisher, Sidwell Friends, hailing from Washington D.C. with a score of 81, followed by Bensalem High School with 118. It was a competitive field overall, with 19 schools ranging from small Quaker schools to large regional high schools.

The home team George School placed ninth and had the overall winner. Cougar Jeffery Love (first place, 16:33.69) claimed this honor from GFS graduate Nick Dahl (Yale ’21), who had won the race the previous two years (2016 – 15:23; 2015 – 16:02). The Tigers’ depth was apparent again this year, as they stormed to a victory in the JV race, having five of the top 13 runners.

"To have so many athletes step up to varsity competition for the first time is exciting for our program, and shows our depth,” said Katie Bergstrom Mark, GFS Director of Athletics. “Our coaching staff is committed to the development of every single athlete. You can see that manifest as the varsity runners are right there supporting every competitor as they cross the line.”

Next up for the Tigers are two Friends Schools League dual meets and the Paul Short Invite at Lehigh University on September 29. For full meet results, visit pa.milesplit.com/meets/273463/results.
