Hoops Madness will jump to it's third straight run of fun this Saturday, March 28, with a day of 3-on-3 basketball competition for all ages.
Inspired by March Madness, the NCAA college basketball championship, Hoops Madness offers kids and adults a chance to play half-court, 3-on-3 games of basketball and participate in a variety of shooting contests.
Organizer Brien Tilley told the Local that he expects nearly 200 people to participate in play. He said the “adult division,” in which teams representing local businesses and institutions like Chestnut Hill Hospital and Weavers Way Co-op, has grown in popularity this year.
“Hoops Madness gives our community the opportunity to bring young and old together to laugh, to make new friends and to display good sportsmanship,” Tilley said. “And maybe a few good jump shots.”
Players are encouraged to form teams of four (three players and a substitute) or they can be placed on a team the day of the tournament. All players will receive a CHCA Hoops Madness t-shirt and are eligible to participate in the 3-point, foul-shooting and half-court shooting competitions. The price is $15 for children 18 and younger, $20 for adult CHCA Members and $25 for non-members.
The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m. All the action will take place in the Woodward and Kingsley Gyms at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, 500 West Willow Grove Ave. Players should arrive at 8:30 a.m., Tilley said.
Families and friends are also encouraged to fill the stands and sidelines. Throughout most of the day, six games will be going on at once and, in between games, players can warm up with Matt Paul Sports coaches and practice their shooting.
No one will go hungry, either. A snack bar selling pizza slices from Cosimo's Pizza and pretzels from Philly Pretzels will run throughout the competition.
As it did the previous two years, Matt Paul Sports will be sponsoring the event and providing basketballs, referees and coaches to help players in between games.
Sponsors for the event, in addition to Matt Paul Sports, include Bowman Properties Chestnut Hill Hotel , Chestnut Hill College, Elfant Wissahickon Realtors Janice Manzi/Louise D’alessandro, Temple Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine At Chestnut Hill Hospital, Cosimo’s Pizza Cafe, Chestnut Hill Sports, Top Of The Hill Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry and ESF Summer Camps.
All proceeds benefit the Chestnut Hill Community Association. If you are interesting in being a sponsor of Hoops Madness call 215-248-8810 or email hoopsmadness@chestnuthill.org.
