Chabad-Lubavitch of Northwest Philadelphia will be hosting a Family Purim Celebration at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at The Cedars House, 200 Northwestern Ave. in Chestnut Hill.
The Holiday of Purim, the most joyous of the Jewish calendar, commemorates the victory of the Jews over the wicked Haman, nearly 2,400 years ago. The happiness of the day is expressed by sending gifts of food to friends, giving charity to the poor, and most of all - by a grand, festive feast.
In addition, the biblical book of Esther, known as the "Megillah," is read. The Megillah recounts the entire story of Purim.
Chabad’s Purim Celebration will begin with a Megillah Reading at 4:15 p.m., followed by a festive dinner at 5 p.m. Adults and children of all ages are invited to attend. The cost is $18 for adults, $10 children, children under 4 free. To RSVP, go to www.ChabadNWP.org or call Rabbi Yitzchok Gurevitz at 215-438-5327.
Chabad will also be distributing “shalach manos” to various senior centers throughout Northwest Philadelphia in connection with the holiday. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Rabbi Gurevitz.
Full details of additional services and Megillah readings are available at www.ChabadNWP.org.
