Philadelphia Sinfonia, an award-winning youth orchestra featuring several area students, will give a free concert at 3 p,m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at the First Presbyterian Church in Germantown, 35 W. Chelten Ave.
The concert opens the orchestra’s 16th season and features Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral,” along with works by Sibelius, Holst and Franz von Suppe’s popular “Poet and Peasant Overture.”
It will be conducted by Gary D. White, who also is music director and conductor of the Pottstown Symphony and former chair of music at Germantown Friends School. White has been conductor of the Philadelphia Sinfonia since 1999.
The Sinfonia is composed of more than 100 musicians from the tri-state area, ranging in age from exceptional middle school students through college-level musicians. Area students include Emma Flickinger, of Roxborough; Justin Gaskey, Catelyn Huang, Eric Huang, Nicholas Pescatore and Dylan Reckner, of Ambler; Tom Gurin, Caroline Kimbro and Ben She, of Fort Washington; Kobi Oxman, of Jenkintown; Jake Shur, of Glenside, and Joshua Roberts, of Norristown.
