Local musicians plan Black Friday concert

Black Friday Freak-out - doors open at 6:30 on Nov. 23.

This Friday, when most people are heating up their Thanksgiving leftovers or decompressing from a day spent fighting hordes of Black Friday bargain hunters, local musician Chris Marsceill and a group of fellow local musicians will be prepping for a what's been billed as Black Friday Freak-Out.

The event, a three-band evening-long event at the Venetian Club, 8030 Germantown Ave.,features three area bands, an open bar and food from local establishments – all of it available for $35. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Music begins at 7.

Marsceill said the event was conceived a year ago, when he, local band leader Roger Learnard and bass player Tony Garro were talking about doing a New Years show. The idea turned into a Black Friday event.

“We said lets do something for the day after Thanksgiving, Marsceill said. “It's easier to get people out, and a lot of people are home and looking for something to do. If you don't want to eat your leftovers the next day, come out to the show.”

The lineup for the evening includes The Rusty Neils, a Neil Young tribute band; Urban Drawl, a rootsy rock band, and The Roger Learnard band, which features classic rock and originals. All three bands will play two sets. Marsceill, who plays keyboards for Learnard, said the band will be joined by local singer-songwriter David Cope, who is currently working on a new album of original material.

Tickets for the event can be purchased for $35 before the show at Hideaway Music, 8612 Germantown Ave. The price at the door is $40. In addition to an open beer and wine bar, the ticket price includes food from local eateries: wings from Tavern on the Hill, hoagie trays from Primo Hoagies, and hors d'oeuvres from Drake Gourmet food, including duck quesadillas and homemade pigs in a blanket.
