A long-empty Germantown Avenue shop will finally be occupied. And by a familiar face.
The former site of Roots, at 7946 Germantown Ave., which had been vacant for about a year, will become the new site of Maloumian Carpets, scheduled to open in September.
Owner Roy Maloumian also has an Oriental rug shop located in Mt. Airy on West Mt. Pleasant Avenue, but the Chestnut Hill shop will house kilim rugs, which, he said, are a bit of a different product.
“It’s something I don’t think has been sold or shown in the Chestnut Hill market,” he said.
According to kilim.com, kilim rugs are Turkish or Persian rugs that are woven differently than the typical Oriental rug.
Maloumian said the store will sell not only rugs, but piano benches, footstools and similar furniture with upholstery.
Maloumian also has a shop in Ft. Myers, Fla. and will open another in Naples, Fla., in December.
