Hot Club of Philadelphia, an acoustic jazz quartet dedicated to the music of legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt, will play Pastorius Park on Wednesday, July 25, as part of the ongoing Pastorius Park Concert Series presented by the Chestnut Hill Community Association.
All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and are made possible by grants from the Chestnut Hill Community Fund and Chestnut Hill Hospital.
Before the concert, at 6 p.m., the CHCA will host a picnic in honor of police, firefighters and postal workers.
The picnic is free for police officers, firefighters, postal workers, their families and all children younger than eight. For others, an $8 entrance fee will cover a meal catered by Top of the Hill Cafe including wraps, sides and homemade desserts.
The whole community is invited.
The concert, presented in part with partner WHYY, will follow the picnic.
Hot Club of Philadelphia has been a recent staple of the concert series. The quartet – started by guitarist Barry Wahrhaftig and violinist Mark Campiglia – plays so-called “gypsy jazz,” popularized by Reinhardt and French violinist Stephane Grapelli. For those who don't know what gypsy jazz is, imagine the typical soundtrack for a Woody Allen film.
The band recently released a recording of Django's work, titled “Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams.” For more, check out the band's website at hotclubphilly.com.
