Mary D. McConaghy, a resident of Chestnut Hill since 1973, died of ALS at her home on May 15. Mary was born in 1945 and raised in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. She first moved to the Philadelphia area to attend Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1967. She obtained a Master of Arts in teaching the following year from Reed College, Portland, Oregon, in 1968, and began teaching elementary school in the Philadelphia School District.
She married Richard W. McConaghy, of Philadelphia, in 1970. Mary stopped teaching in the 1980s when she and her husband adopted their sons Edward (Ned) and Alexander. In the 1990s, Mary returned to school to earn a PhD in American Civilization from the University of Pennsylvania. Until her retirement on disability in 2011, she was a historian/archivist and the web coordinator at the University of Pennsylvania Archives.
She is survived by her husband Richard, her sons Ned and Alex, and her sister Susan Delaney, of Minneapolis, MN.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 26, noon, at the Episcopal Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Chestnut Hill. At her request, organ donation for ALS research has occurred.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted to: The ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter, 321 Norristown Road - Suite 260, Ambler, Pa 19002; The Cradle Foundation, 2049 Ridge Ave., Evanston IL 60201; or the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields.
