In their first home squash match of the new year, the Germantown Friends School boys easily turned away visiting Hill School last Wednesday afternoon at the Germantown Cricket Club. Winning 9-0 with all bouts decided in straight games, the Tigers forged above the .500 mark at 3-2 on the season.
Hill fell to 1-7, its lone victory coming against New Jersey’s Pingry School. The Blues were missing their regular number three player, but it’s doubtful that it made much difference in this one-sided affair.
A trio of ninth graders secured the bottom third of the team ladder for GFS, all facing seniors from the visiting side. Number seven Ben Carabello won 11-7, 11-6, 11-6 over Hill’s Vivek Venkatesh, and one spot below Satya Butler overcame Ronuk Modi, 11-2, 11-3, 11-5. Butler’s twin brother, Anand, was playing in the ninth spot, where he defeated the Blues’ Ben Kim, 11-1, 11-2, 11-9.
The three freshmen weren’t the youngest players on the courts, though. Tigers eighth-grader Calvin McCafferty was holding down the number four spot, and he handled Jose Rodriguez, a Hill junior, 11-1, 11-6, 11-3. McCafferty’s older brother, Max, is a junior and the number one player for Germantown. He posted scores of 11-6, 11-3, 11-6 over Hill’s head honcho, Peter Sammis.
Another 11th-grader, David Sneed, secured an 11-5, 11-1, 11-6 victory in the second spot, playing against freshman William Pantle. The lone senior in the Tigers’ line-up, Diego Sanz, knocked off junior Jake Eckhart, 11-4, 11-0, 11-3.
Rounding out the sweep for the home team were a pair of juniors in the middle of the line-up, number five Sam York and number six Drew Wallace. Wallace went by Alexander Boova, a sophomore guest, 11-2, 11-5, 11-3, and York had similar success against another Hill tenth-grader, Ray Zimmerman, putting up scores of 11-4, 11-2, 11-5.
One of last year’s premier players for Germantown Friends, Alex Nalle, was in the house rooting on his former teammates. Nalle is currently the top player for the team at Tufts University, and another Tigers racquetman from the Class of 2011, Daniel Sneed, is number two on the ladder at Wesleyan. Sneed is the older brother of current GFS junior David Sneed.
