All the scoring for the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy hockey team occurred within a six-minute window in last Tuesday’s Girls Inter-Ac League bout, but the outburst was potent enough to secure a 4-0 victory for the Lions over the visiting Bears of Baldwin School.

With 15:33 remaining in the opening half, Angela Cascio assisted fellow senior tri-captain Libbie Maine for what would stand up as the winning goal for the home side. Three minutes later Cascio pocketed a goal of her own off of an assist from junior Taylor Wrubel, who proceeded to whack in the other two SCH goals with 11:33 and 10:05 left to play in the first half. Wrubel’s first marker was set up by Cascio, and the second was unassisted as the junior rushed a loose ball in front of the cage.

The Lions’ third captain, Lacey Swift-Farley, was a lynchpin in the midfield, and when the Bears tried to take the ball up the field on their strong side (the right), their progress was frequently halted by yet another upperclassman, Tina Reynolds. She would get the ball moving in the other direction, and Maine would usually continue to transport the orange nugget along the wing.

“The connections up the field were gorgeous, the best we’ve had this season,” stated SCH coach Lydia Imperiale.

“You could tell in the first half that the girls really wanted it, and they were hammering away in the circle,” said the Lions’ leader. “Taylor Wrubel is really going to the goal aggressively. We moved her from a middie to a forward this year and it’s really paying off.

Jackie Willits is another junior who’s really playing well,” Imperiale went on, “and in the back I was impressed with Chelsea Richardson and Morgan Schneer. I though they played with a lot of composure.”

Senior Ashlee Hale, a three-year starter in goal, made seven saves to whitewash the visitors. Bears’ keeper Maddie Carre, an eighth-grader who was under a lot of pressure, stopped 15 shots.

Baldwin played much better in the second half, battling the hosts to a 0-0 draw. Tuesday’s win leveled the league record for the Lions at 1-1 and moved them to 3-2 overall. The Bears (1-2 overall) saw their league mark drop to 0-2; their SCH setback followed a 2-1 loss to Penn Charter.

Back in the Lions’ league opener on September 14, the local sticksters scored first on Germantown Academy and were tied with the Patriots at halftime, 1-1.

“We kind of fell apart in the second half, and they ended up winning 4-1,” Imperiale related. “The second half has been a problem for us; we were tied 0-0 with Lawrenceville at halftime, and we lost 4-0.

“We have a lot of strong teams left on the schedule,” the coach continued, “and we’re going to need to play hard for 60 minutes. Even today we let down a bit after halftime and Baldwin pressured us, but Ashlee played well in goal and held onto her shutout.”
