Powered by 17 points from rising sophomore forward Carly Monzo and 11 from junior Meg Geatens, Mount St. Joseph Academy recorded a 52-33 victory over Springside School last Monday night in a summer basketball battle. Down by 11 points at the intermission, the Springside Lions pulled within five points of the leaders (28-23) early in the second half. The Magic responded with an 8-0 run and remained in control the rest of the way.

Mount St. Joe is the only team in the Lou Cappiello League that customarily limits it roster to rising freshmen and to sophomores who played junior varsity ball the previous winter. However, since the Magic have not yet conscripted any new ninth-graders for summer ball, a number of varsity veterans such as Geatens and Monzo played in the Springside game.

Two lay-ups and two free throws by senior guard Bridget Higgins helped the Mount build a 12-5 advantage over the first five minutes, with Springside’s lone field goal in that stretch coming from senior power forward Michelle Boggs.

This was the first chance new Springside coach Steve Purcell would have to see his players in action, and a lot of girls had to be rotated in and out of the game. The Lions got back-to-back lay-ups from junior guard Gianna Pownall and later senior guard Sydni Epps and freshman Olivia Byron found the hoop as the score tightened up to 16-13. MSJ’s Monzo and Geatens shared the scoring as the Magic rang up eight straight points and then continued on to a 28-17 halftime lead.

As round two got underway field goals by sophomore Julia Schumacher, junior Meredith Spann, and Pownall reduced Springside’s deficit to five points. Sophomore Julia Shinkle started up the offense for the Magic, and Higgins, Monzo and Geatens joined in to build a 38-23 bulge with about nine minutes left to play, and Springside didn’t pose a serious threat after that.

Sophomore Alex Louin wound up with eight points for the winners, who got single field goals from juniors Adrienne Cellucci and Rachel Dapper and sophomore Gen Hagedorn. Epps led the Lions with nine points, and Springside received eight points from Boggs, six from Pownall, and four from Schumacher. Senior Aly Markey added a bucket for the Lions, while classmate Alexis Giovinazzo ran the offense at point guard when she was in the game.
