American tap dancer Fred Astaire woos fashion model Ginger Rogers in director Mark Sandrich's Art Deco screwball musical comedy. Sensational Irving Berlin songs include, "No Strings (I'm Fancy Free)," "Isn't This a Lovely Day (to Be Caught in the Rain)?," "Top Hat, White Tie and Tails," "Cheek to Cheek," and "The Piccolino."

In 1990, Top Hat was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
