News update: Cheese Shop closes, Lutheran Seminary proposes large scale residential development

The Chestnut Hill Cheese Shop announced Monday that it is closing its doors for good.

Co-owner Susan Weiss told the Local that her husband, Dan Weiss, who took the business over from his father, was ready to retire. The Cheese Shop has been in Chestnut Hill for 56 years.

Weiss said the shop will be open one more time on Friday, Oct. 11 from 2 to 7 p.m. for a BYOB retirement party for Dan. Visitors and well-wishers can stop by and are invited to bring wine or beer. There is some stock left that will be for sale, Weiss said.

Seminary plans expansion

United Lutheran Seminary has proposed a massive development at its campus at 7391 Germantown Ave., which includes the construction of three five-story buildings for 149 housing units.

The proposal was made public this weekend by East Mt. Airy Neighbors, which posted details of a public meeting on the matter for Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. Materials for the meeting were posted by Mt. Airy residents on the popular social media network Nextdoor on Sunday, Oct. 6.

Phone calls to both East Mt. Airy Neighbors and the United Lutheran Seminary were not returned on Monday, Oct. 7 as the Local went to press.

According to the Nextdoor post, which contained drawings submitted to East Mt. Airy Neighbors, the seminary plans on creating 208 new residential units on the campus. Of the 208, 149 of those units will be “market rate,” according to the proposal documents. Also, the seminary’s Wiedman Hall will be renovated to accommodate 48 units of affordable housing, and 11 units will be renovated on Gowen Avenue.

Other proposals of note include the demolition of the seminary’s power plant to make room for the three new structures and the relocation of the President’s House.

The seminary will need to rezone the property in order to follow through with the plans. Cindy Bass’ office said it is aware of the proposal, and representatives will be at the meeting on Oct. 22.
