Winning field hockey games on the road and at home last week, Mount St. Joseph Academy reached the middle of the month with an unblemished record of 7-0.

The level of competition the Magic have faced has varied widely. The Mount closed out the month of August with an 11-2 romp over PIAA opponent Marple Newtown High School. The first week of September featured much closer games decided by a single goal; the Mounties edged Germantown Academy of the Inter-Ac League, 2-1, then recorded a 3-2 victory in their Athletic Association of Catholic Academies opener against Gwynedd Mercy Academy.

Then it was back to lopsided scores last week as the Mount took on two more AACA rivals. Overcoming Merion Mercy Academy, 7-0, at the Proving Grounds in Conshohocken on Tuesday, the Magic returned home to knock off Villa Joseph Marie last Thursday afternoon by a score of 11-0.

Junior Lexi Kelly started in goal for both of last week's shutouts, and sophomore Kathryn Pedicino also saw action. It was the 10th grader who made the Mount's one save on Thursday.

The scoring against Villa Joe was scattered among eight different players, with junior Avery Lasky and sophomores Tess Hankins (one assist) and Julia McGlynn each netting two goals.

The only goal the Magic would need for the victory came from Hankins just half-a-minute into the match. McGlynn scored twice during the opening quarter, and another member of the strong sophomore class, Caitlin Paul, also got on the board. Senior Sienna Noh found the backboard late in the period to make it 5-0.

Early in the second quarter the tally rose to 6-0 thanks to Lasky, and it was 7-0 for halftime after freshman Kelly Whittock assisted on a goal by senior Sammi Stoud.

In round three, junior Alexa Durand first assisted on Hankins' second goal, then scored one herself as Hankins returned the favor with an assist. A strike by senior Jill Marcolina was set up by Paul, and Lasky's second goal (unassisted) completed the scoring, still in the third period.

Head coach Kyra Castano was able to give her reserves a lot of playing time, especially in the fourth quarter.

"I try to approach games like this the same way as the really close ones," she said. "I think it's important to be consistent. You get to play more girls in games like this, and I like to experiment with people playing different positions than they normally do."
