Recently, two classes at Jenks Academy for the Arts and Sciences had a virtual visit from local author and illustrator Brian Biggs. This special event was organized by Prather O’Donnell, the Children’s Librarian at the Chestnut Hill Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, who arranged the visits with teachers Kassidy Beach and Erin Younis (Kindergarten) and Christina Moore and Christa Wilson (1st Grade).
Biggs, who is now in his fifth year of visiting classes at Jenks, spoke to the children about his most recent book collaboration entitled “Sullivan, Who is Always Too Loud.” The story, written by Mical Ostow and illustrated by Biggs, tells the tale of a little (and loud) boy named Sullivan, who works on recognizing when is the right (and wrong) time to use his big voice. The Friends of the Chestnut Hill Library sponsored the event and generously arranged for each child in the Kindergarten and 1st Grade classes (more than 100 of them) to receive a copy of the book.
Jenks Academy has been 100% virtual since the start of the school year and throughout this time, the teachers have been working diligently to create a sense of community that is lacking due to students and staff not being in the building.
