Letters: Not excited by celebrity namedrop

Posted

I was glad to see Len Lear’s article highlighting Mikel Elam, a local artist and manager of the Artist’s and Craftsman’s art supply store. I was, however, dismayed with the assertion that Mikel’s relationship to Miles Davis would perhaps be more interesting than his artwork. This is particularly upsetting since I have never known Mikel to namedrop or otherwise use his relationship with Miles Davis to impress. Who would ever want to have their own work compared to their relationship to such an iconic figure? Please, let’s not let our excitement around celebrity blind us to the importance of those around us, interesting or not.
