Last week, Germantown Friends School (GFS) kindergarten teacher Annie Errickson and assistant teacher Lauren Postell transformed their classroom into a construction site as part of their themed immersion study. With physical distance measures in place, the students worked on their own learning stations that focused on foundational reading skills, number sense, and key elements of our calendar math routine. Purposeful play stations sparked their design thinking mind to create buildings and towers that used our geoblocks as foundations.
This experience was a surprise for the students. When they arrived in the morning, they were given a tool vest, hardhat, and even tool shaped pens to complete their work. There was lots of excitement and smiles!
“During these uncertain times, it is important to strengthen our love of learning in unique ways that encourage academic risk-taking and creative thinking. Seeing the surprised smiles when my students walk into a classroom that has been completely transformed into a new themed space shows how even when faced with new challenges due to COVID-19, we can still have joy in our every day.”
“We learned about the alphabet and math while we were playing. We sorted buttons, built with blocks, and worked on puzzles. I did three puzzles! I liked wearing a hard hat and apron. It was the best day!,” said kindergarten student Emmy Cram.
