GFS held a bicycle maintenance pop-up clinic

Posted

On June 1, the Germantown Friends School's Bicycle Maintenance 101 May Term class hosted a free community pop-up clinic, providing safety checks and minor adjustments to get bikes ready for safe summer riding.

Students in the class partnered with Neighborhood Bike Works — a West Philadelphia non-profit committed to strengthening Philadelphia communities by providing equitable access to bicycling and bike repair — to learn how to complete routine maintenance on bicycles and prepare for the community clinic. Upper School students in the class were also visited by State Representative Darisha Parker during the free event.

May Term, normally called January Term, was held later this year to accommodate the unique conditions posed by COVID-19. This annual program enables GFS students to live the mission and values of the school and explore new passions, interests, and interdisciplinary ways of learning about the world. Through a program of “mini courses,” May Term provides teachers and students a space for experimentation, investigation, and reflection.

This year, in addition to bicycle maintenance, students had over 60 class options, including some taught by their classmates!  Offerings included: Asian American Racial Literacy, Beatlemania, Calligraphy, Documenting Pandemic Life, Exploring African American Music, Food Justice, Building Accessible Games, Climate Crisis, Self-Care, Human Development, Monuments Reimagined, and many more.
