GA track & field takes on Malvern, Notre Dame

Posted

For its last dual meet in the month of April, Germantown Academy invited teams from all-boys Malvern Prep and all-girls Academy of Notre Dame to the Cary Stadium track last Wednesday afternoon.

The track and field squads were able to wrap up the meet just before rain arrived in the area, and in boys' competition the host Patriots outscored the Malvern Friars, 63-35, while the visiting Irish of Notre Dame edged out the GA girls, 50-41.

The GA boys won five of the eight individual events on the track. Early on, they went one-two in the 100-meter dash with freshman Julian Dean and senior Vance Thorpe.

Malvern won the other sprints, but Patriots freshman Ethan Na won the 800 and placed third in the 1600. Germantown actually swept the top three places in the 1600, led by junior Andrei Vava. Freshman Walter Mulroy, who placed second in the 1600, won the 3200-meter run.

Sophomore Arjun Sood was runner-up to Mulroy in the 3200, and senior Chaz Murgia came in second in the 800. Sophomore Ellis Johnson gave GA a victory in the 110-meter high hurdles.

No 4 x 800-meter relays were held for either boys or girls, an in two other boys' relays the Friars won the 4 x 400 and also prevailed in an extremely close 4 x 100.

The Pats won five of the seven field events, with junior Blake Brown winning the long jump and landing in second place in the triple jump. Junior Jonah Hunt won the javelin and another 11th-grader, Mario Toscano, won the discus and placed third in the shot put, where freshman Gavin Fountain took first place.

Junior C.J. Mersky was second in both the shot and the discus, and GA also got second-place points from senior Aaron Parks (long jump) and junior Sebastian Cortes (javelin). In the pole vault, sophomore Adrian Diem was the winner and his classmate Robby Bright was the runner-up.

In the girls' field events, Germantown Academy won four of the seven contests. Sophomore Layla Gentile won both the shot put and the javelin and placed second in the discus. Freshman Devon Geist won the pole vault and tied for first in the high jump along with senior Aja McBride.

Juniors Gabby Colucci and Emma Merrill finished second in the triple jump and the javelin, respectively, and freshman Elli Wang was second in the pole vault.

The Patriot girls did not fare quite as well on the track, where the visiting Irish won two of the three sprints, the 800 and the 3200. In the relays, GA won the 4 x 100 and the Irish took the 4 x 400.

Freshmen Lyla Perry and Addi Levensten gave GA a one-two finish in the 400 meters, and junior Abby Durkin won the 1600 by more than 20 seconds. Coming over from the field events, McBride placed second in the 200-meter dash, and Geist was third in the 100-meter high hurdles.

Two other ninth-graders earned second-place points for the Patriots, Emma Shapiro in the 100 meters and Lauren Truong in the 3200.
