Folkshul Speaker Series: “Immigration and the Racial Pandemic: Connections and Intersections”

Posted

Cathryn Miller-Wilson, Executive Director of HIAS Pennsylvania, will guide discussion about the unique and all too common experiences of immigrants in the U.S. - how racial injustice, so easy to see in the horror of police brutality, impacts immigrant communities as well but in hidden ways. Beyond the racially based anti-immigrant rhetoric, immigrants in their daily lives suffer from the prejudices that are unfortunately highly prevalent in governmental policy, government workers as well as, of course, the public. Adjusting to life in America requires not only gaining a level of comfort with unfamiliar language, customs and traditions but also with American racism and xenophobia. This session will focus on these impacts on immigrants and immigration and end with a Q and A focused around actions that can be taken to ameliorate these impacts.
