On Thursday, Nov. 18, the police officers and staff of the Philadelphia Police Department’s 14th District, which serves most of Northwest Philadelphia, were treated to a Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings.
Students from LaSalle University served a turkey dinner complete with stuffing, green beans, mashed and sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, corn, and cranberry sauce, while volunteer members of the Police District Advisory Council (PDAC) provided a full range of desserts and soft drinks. The LaSalle Ambassadors Program partners with PDAC to provide this celebration, now in it’s 22nd year, to thank the officers for their services year round.
Trevor Martinez, 20, a Junior math and interdisciplinary science major, is the Ambassadors service coordinator. He organizes students in a variety of service projects such as helping at Face–to-Face food service programs, volunteering with a greyhound rescue and planning special events at a neighborhood elementary school. “It’s a great way to connect with the community,” said Martinez, “in a very real and intimate way.”
The Ambassadors also serve Thanksgiving dinner to the officers at the 35th Police District on Broad Street, as well as the firehouse that is attached to it.
LeeAnn Bushar is the Faculty Staff Advisor to the Ambassadors. “These are our neighborhood cops,” said Bushar, “They take care of us, so this is our way of saying thank you and provide a service to them for serving us all year.”
