Letter: `A Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood

Posted

As a Springfield Township resident, I appreciate the coverage by the Local of the current sensitive issues related to hate-filled racist flyers and efforts to improve communication with our police. I had an opportunity to attend a meeting at the library to discuss both the flyers and the controversy over the Thin Blue Line Flag. I left feeling confused, dismayed and puzzled that our police have resisted engaging in a dialogue about these sensitive issues. We all have biases and can benefit from efforts to increase our understanding of others. In the Inquirer, a respected African American consultant was quoted as saying that “policing is 1% Rambo and 99% Mr. Rogers.” My hope is that we can move Springfield Township more in the direction of Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood where we can know our neighbor and have conversations with the men and women we are paying to help keep us safe.
