A beer-based ‘popup’ brews in Mt. Airy

At Mt. Airy Biergarten, a weekend "popup" spot on Germantown Avenue, what started as a side project has blossomed into a labor of love that brings to the forefront a core objective of the Tired Hands Brewing Company: local community impact.

The company came up with the concept of "Charity Brews" — events in which staff members craft a special brew for a particular charity and donate a portion of sale proceeds to the organization in question.

One of the latest locations operated by the Tired Hands Brewing Company, the Mt. Airy spot is a relaxed and family-friendly outdoor venue for patrons to unwind every weekend, with Tired Hands' award-winning brews, eclectic music, and other community activities.

There are picnic tables and a fire pit to gather around in an open-air courtyard, complemented by an entire setup for live music tucked under a roofed garage — alongside a charming, beach-style bar. Local performers arrive to use that setup nearly every weekend. Local artisans are invited to put up their stalls, and games are available for both kids and adults.

Rob Berliner, chief operating officer, says the simplicity of the space is unique and almost elegant — and seems to keep patrons coming back.

"Most important to me is the fact that I've met so many of my neighbors as a result of hanging out there," said Berliner, who lives a few blocks away from the Biergarten location and is very involved in its day-to-day running.

He hopes that the Tired Hands team can help increase foot traffic in the surrounding area, boosting nearby businesses like the Adelie Coffee House and Zsa's Ice Cream, which are located right down the street. Berliner and the Tired Hands team are already in talks with these businesses to collaborate and organize events for the Mt. Airy neighborhood.

Berliner said that for him, the staff is what gives the spot its special magic.

"They are a group of people who visited the spot and fell in love with it," he said — and have been continuously improving the space by decorating it and coming up with new ideas about what to do next.

If you want to soak in some of the local culture, take a break and catch up with friends or just taste some one-of-a-kind drinks, Mt. Airy Biergarten is the place to put on your bucket list for Northwest Philadelphia.

Mt. Airy Biergarten is located at 6730 Germantown Ave., just south of Pelham Street. For more information, go to tiredhands.com/mt-airy-biergarten.
