Abolition Hall’s Mt. Airy connection

Readers of the August 23 Local article by Colleen Gallagher on the history of Plymouth Meeting's Abolition Hall might be interested to know of a Mt. Airy connection to the Corsons and the Maulsbys.

Martha Maulsby Corson's brother, Dr. George Maulsby, a career naval doctor, was married to Anna Matilda Lovett, younger sister of Charlotte Lovett Bostwick, who erected and endowed Mt. Airy's library, and of Thomas Robert Lovett, whose portrait hangs in the library.

In an 1859 diary entry, Martha Corson's brother-in-law, Dr. Hiram Corson, described the recently married Mrs. Maulsby as "quite a lovely woman."  Subsequently, Hiram Corson was the main speaker when the library building (now Lovett's meeting room) opened on March 12, 1887.

Scared for my country

Following up on my Open Letter to Donald Trump, which you published a few weeks ago: There is something seriously remiss in our country that a significant part of the electorate (Mr. Trump’s presumably working class, disenfranchised base as well as financially comfortable professionals) supported and apparently continue to support the man—for President!

The man who reportedly spoke on one or more Howard Stern shows about his daughter being a “piece of ass,” engaged in scurrilous sexual and sexist conversation with Billy Baldwin, which is preserved on tape, and has encouraged crowds to violence. The same man who makes odious comparisons between neo-Nazis and those who oppose them. The same man who seems to officially oppose breast feeding infants and uses threats, unrelated to breast feeding, to force other nations to his point of view [NYT, July 8]. The same man who repeatedly echoes neo-Nazi, racist ideology.

Shameful and frightening behavior by an individual. Terrifying behavior for an American President!

A great profile

Thanks for your profile on Linda Engler [“50 years in the restaurant business....,” Aug 16]. She's terrific at her job. It was fun to learn a bit more about her and what makes her tick. Scoogi's is my favorite restaurant, and Linda is a big part of that reason.
