Winston Cartwright Sheppard

Winston Cartwright Sheppard passed away on July 31, 2018 at the age of 103.

He was the beloved husband of the late Olive Pearson Sheppard for 73 years and loving father to Mary-Helen S. Boothby (Richard), W. Cartwright Sheppard, Jr. (Linda), Sally P. Sheppard and Charles L. Sheppard, II.  He will be missed by his nine grandchildren and one great grandson. He is preceded in death by his brother Charles L. Sheppard, Jr. Winston was born and raised in Chestnut Hill and attended Chestnut Hill Academy, Class of 1933.

He worked on the ENIAC Project in the early 40’s and the development of the LORAN radar system during World War II.  After retiring from Burroughs Corporation, Winston volunteered for many organizations and served on the boards of the American Connemara Pony Society and the Pennsylvania SPCA.

He was a founding member of the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Associations and was a committed bird watcher and conservationist throughout his life. In addition, his interests included tennis, trapshooting, photography and travel and he was happiest sailing off the coast of his beloved Maine.  Winston was a lifelong member of the Philadelphia Cricket Club as well as South Hill Trapshooting Club and the Penllyn Club.

A memorial service was held in his honor on August 6, 2018.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Springside Chestnut Hill Academy- Blue and Blue Fund, 500 W. Willow Grove Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19118.
