The volleyball net went back up in the Mount St. Joseph Academy gym last week as the Magic’s current court crop congregated for the start of pre-season practice on Monday.

The Mount graduated a strong class of six seniors from the 2017 team, but at least they were well distributed between the various disciplines of hitting, setting and digging. Younger players will have to step up to make up for some impressive defensive stats produced by last year’s starters, though.

There are six seniors on the roster again this year, as well as six juniors. Two of the 12th-graders are 2018 co-captains Kylie Barton and Megan McGettigan, and their classmates are Summer Adamson, Sasha Davey, Catie Esslinger and Haley Tyrell. Adamson, an outside hitter, and Esslinger, a setter, have been varsity regulars for several seasons.

Part of the regular varsity squad as 10th-graders last year were current juniors Maggie Fitzpatrick, Olivia Nace and Kelly Rothenberg. This fall they’ll be joined by classmates Isabella Goebel, Shannon Reilly and Katie Tausz.

Last year the first freshman to earn a spot on the varsity squad was Vivianna Carrasco, and for 2018 she and Nicole Uzzo are the two sophomores starting out on the top team.

Former Haverford College mentor Amy Bergin is back for her second season as the MSJ head coach, and also returning is familiar assistant coach Mary Kate Steinmetz, a 2010 graduate of the Mount and a current faculty member. East Coast Power club coach Jerry Abdalla also remains on the staff, even though the youngest of his two daughters who played for the Mount, Cassidy, graduated last spring and just headed off to play at Rowan University in New Jersey.

Mount St. Joseph ended the 2017 season in the semifinal round of the PIAA District 1 tournament, finishing with an overall record of 17-7 after placing third within the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies with a mark of 10-4.
