William R. Briggs, Jr., of Springhouse Estates, formerly of Chestnut Hill, died on Sunday, July 15, after a prolonged illness.

Born March 14, 1940, in Philadelphia, he was the son of William R. Briggs and his wife Francis A. (Eaton).

Briggs grew up in Wyndmoor and graduated from Germantown Academy and Ursinus College.

He joined the US Navy in 1962 and served two tours in Vietnam, earning several medals and a combat action ribbon retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was active in the US Navy Reserves and volunteered with the USO for many years.

He began his career in banking at PNB in Philadelphia and retired as a Vice President of commercial banking for Wachovia.

He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Eleanor (Watkins) in 2015. He is survived by his daughter Stephanie (Michael DiMatties) of Clarksboro, NJ; his son W. Robert Briggs (Rachel Shusterman) of Downingtown; grandchildren Michael and Justin DiMatties and Jenica and Lucia Briggs.

A funeral service was held on Sat. July 21. Interment at George Washington Memorial Park to follow.

The family has asked donations in his name be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research at michaeljfox.org or in his memory to the USO at USO.org.
