Low turn-out for PC as summer ball resumes

Returning from a two-week hiatus in summer hoops during and after the July 4 holiday week, Penn Charter sailed back into competition in the Gwynedd Mercy Academy League with a skeleton crew.

With eight players away on vacation and several veterans injured, the Quakers scraped together the bare minimum of five athletes last Wednesday, and when one rested on the bench to recover from a temporary ailment, PC even played four-on-five for a short spell. The fivesome for the Quakers was also quite young, the oldest athlete being rising sophomore guard Jamie Kubach.

Charter was able to stay relatively close to league host Gwynedd Mercy for awhile, but after the Monarchs led 25-15 at halftime they kept drawing farther away in the second period to win 51-28.

While it’s important for Penn Charter’s players to have a chance to play together in the summer, this league is not ideal geographically for a number of the Quakers. On another occasion when PC was scheduled for a 6:00 PM game, one player and her family fought through rush hour traffic for two hours to get to Gwynedd. The old outdoor league in Roxborough that was run by former Springside coach Brian Morris was based a little over five minutes from Penn Charter’s campus, but that enterprise was discontinued a few years ago.

Now, going into the second half of July, Charter’s players were widely scattered, and none of the team’s returning starters (all five) were able to make it out for last week’s soirée.

Kelsey Bess, a forward who’ll be going into eighth grade at PC, provided half of the Quakers’ points on Wednesday (14), getting PC rolling with the first of her two three-point field goals in the first half. When freshman Kelsey Maley hit a free throw just after that, the Quakers led 4-2, but then Gwynedd deposited four consecutive field goals to take the lead for good.

Later, the final basket of the first half was a three-pointer that put Gwynedd up by 10 points at the interlude, 25-15. The Monarchs strengthened their advantage by opening the second period with a 10-3 run, and they enjoyed a comfortable lead the rest of the way.

The PC Quakers will wrap up their summer campaign with back-to-back games at Gwynedd this Wednesday.
