The Foodery's new Germantown Avenue location.

After purchasing the former Towey’s Tavern back in October and working on extensive renovations, the Foodery is finally set to open its Chestnut Hill location on Friday, July 20. Foodery owner Jack Lee has wanted to bring the bottle shop to the Hill for the last several years, and this opening will be the culmination of that desire.

“I had great interest in this location and surrounding community for well over three or four years,” Lee said. “Although I had made efforts to reach out to the previous owner, I had been unable to due to the fact that Towey's had no intention of selling the location. Fast forward to last year, and I happened to come across 7829 Germantown Avenue listed on the market and available. I immediately jumped on the chance to expand into Chestnut Hill mainly because it has a unique atmosphere to it.”

Though the property is under new ownership, the bar from Towey’s will continue to be used by the Foodery. This will be the first location to serve beer on tap from over the bar, though it will still offer its usual selection of bottled craft beers and deli sandwiches as well.

Since taking over as owner of the Foodery in 2001, Lee said he has been changing the direction of the business to gourmet, high-end craft beers. With each location now offering hundreds of different craft beers, Lee is focusing on becoming a unique establishment in Chestnut Hill and getting familiar with the neighborhood.

“I am looking forward to building a relationship with the locals and the community of Chestnut Hill, and hopefully we will become popular enough so that people will eventually come from all over, and not just Chestnut Hill,” Lee said. “That is what I look forward to most, but also feel that is simultaneously the biggest challenge as well.”
