On Monday of last week Mount St. Joseph Academy's tennis team completed a home-away sweep of Athletic Association of Catholic Academies rival Gwynedd Mercy Academy. In their first encounter two weeks earlier, the Magic posted a 4-1 victory, with Gwynedd winning one of the doubles bouts, but the Mounties kept a clean slate in the rematch, 5-0.

Defending AACA champion Mount St. Joe raised its league record to 7-0, and the Magic also have won a non-league bout against Souderton High School, 6-1. Gwynedd slipped to 3-4 in the league with the outcome of the Mount rematch.

Senior Sahar Ali made the first mark in the MSJ win column with her 6-1, 6-1 decision at third singles over the Monarchs' Abigail Coachi, also a 12th-grader. Although many of the points were longer, a pair of 6-1 sets were also recorded by Magic junior Elizabeth Christine as she overcame the host team's number two, sophomore Tess Flanigan.

The first singles players, junior Stow Weiss for Mount St. Joseph and senior Genevieve Wurtz for Gwynedd, play doubles together in tournaments. Head-to-head this season, Weiss won in three sets in the bout at the Mount last month, and in their second meeting she prevailed in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, to remain undefeated this fall.

By the time that contest was over, though, the visitors had already secured the team victory by prevailing at first doubles. Here junior Liz Meister and freshman Rachel Zilligan put up scores of 6-2, 6-1 against GMA juniors Kelsie Van Thuyne and Olivia Vrie.

The court opened up by Ali's quick victory was the stage for another efficient performance by the Magic. Seniors Bridget Malott and Emma Mirabelli didn't lose a game as they overcame the Monarchs' second doubles duo of freshman Jordan White and senior Maddie Ormond.
