Former Mount St. Joseph Academy rower Chierika Ukogu ('10) was recently named 2016 Female Athlete of the Year by the Schuylkill Navy, the primary organization for amateur rowing in the Philadelphia area and the oldest amateur athletic governing body in the United States.
Ukogu, who was a member of the crew at Stanford University, rowed for Nigeria at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in an effort to inspire the youth of her parents' homeland in western Africa. When still only a ninth-grader at the Mount, she collected 10,000 pairs of sandals and flip-flops and took them to Nigeria to be distributed to residents of rural areas who had no shoes of their own.
