Richard Z. Zimmermann,Jr., 96, (aka Ricardo Z. Zimmermann) of Saunderstown, RI passed away peacefully July 28, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Helen W. (Brown) Zimmermann for sixty-eight years. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was a son of the late Ricardo Z. and Maria T. (Graham) Zimmermann. Mr. Zimmermann survived enemy fire in the US Army Air Force and served as a Buck Sergeant in the Dutch East Indies and Philippine Islands during WWII. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania and received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University. He was a consulting engineer in Philadelphia and later served as the town engineer for the Town of Jamestown, RI before retiring at age seventy-eight. At age seventy-nine he wrote and published An Amateur’s Guide to Particle Physics, a Primer for the Lay Person. Mr. Zimmermann was the President of the Philadelphia Chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers in 1965, and was a member of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers. He served on the Board of Directors of the Cocumcussoc Association, as well as on the Board of the RI Renal Institute. Mr. Zimmermann was an amateur Ham Radio operator and an enthusiastic sailor. He enjoyed archaeology and taught himself to read Egyptian hieroglyphics. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Charles F. Zimmermann of Latvia; a daughter, Helen B. “Nellie” Sabin of Newport; a half-brother, T.C. Price Zimmermann of Huntersville, NC; and five grandchildren. He was the father of the late Richard C. Zimmermann; brother of the late John E. ”Ted” Zimmermann II and Maria Thayer Speirs; and half-brother of the late McKinley Zimmermann. His Burial at Cedar Cemetery, Jamestown will be private. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to South County Hospital will be appreciated.
