A Mt. Airy musician was killed over the weekend while hiking on the Appalachian Trail when he was struck by a falling tree.
According to a report in the Philadelphia Inquirer today, Jason Parish, 36, was seven miles from Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, hiking a steep trail with two companions. An off-duty park ranger who happened to be nearby performed CPR, but Parish was pronounced dead on the scene. He was said to have been an avid camper.
Parish was an accomplished and practicing folk singer. His Facebook page details recent gigs at Ortleib's and the Mermaid Inn, where he held a record release party in January. He also appeared live at G-Town Radio, which played his music regularly. Parish also played Mt. Airy Day last May. His latest album, "A Mountain and a Hill," is available on Spotify and iTunes.
We'll update this story when we learn more.
