Mt. Airy parishes to hold joint food drive

Posted

Volunteers from two Mt. Airy Catholic parishes, Holy Cross and St. Michael the Archangel, will hold their second Saturday Food Drive from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Acme Food Market, Germantown Avenue and Sedgwick Street.

Customers entering the store will be offered a shopping list of non-perishable groceries that they might wish to purchase and contribute to the drive, which stocks the Food Pantry at Holy Cross Church. Last month's collection netted four large bins and seven full bags of groceries. The parishes plan to continue this joint venture as a monthly event.

The Food Pantry, established in 1990 at Holy Cross Church, 140 E. Mt. Airy Ave., is open on Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Clients should use the basement entrance on the right side of the church. While there are no identification requirements, clients should bring their own bags to carry food items.

Holy Cross Church and its parish school have served the Mt. Airy community for more than 100 years. St. Michael’s is a Catholic, Anglican Use parish which meets at Holy Cross for Mass on Sundays at 9 a.m. and at St. Therese Church for weekday Masses and Wednesday Bible study. The formerly Anglican parish preserves much of Anglican tradition, combining it with elements of Roman Catholic forms. The parish rectory is located at St. Therese, 6611 Ardleigh St.
