The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill, at 8855 Germantown Ave., will dedicate its newly renovated Burleigh Cruikshank Memorial Chapel during a worship service at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 27.

The day will continue with several celebratory events, including “Cantatas and Chamber Music,” the first in a series of monthly concerts featuring J.S. Bach’s Cantata 80, “Ein feste Burg is unser Gott”and G.F. Handel’s “Look down, harmonious saint.”

The Cantatas and Chamber Music performance, conducted by Daniel Spratlan, will begin at 5 p.m. and will be preceded by wine, cheese and other refreshments under the portico outside Cruikshank Chapel at 4:30 p.m. The suggested donation is $15.

The Haverstick-Borthwick Company was selected to implement the design of John Milner Architects Inc., who also designed the renovation of the church’s sanctuary and fellowship hall in 1997. The chapel will create new spaces for worship, weddings, memorial services, musical performances, community gatherings and church meetings.

"Every time we have renovated a space in our church home, we have opened our doors in new ways to the community around us,” said the Rev. Cynthia A. Jarvis, minister of the church. “The renovation of the church’s sanctuary, Widener Hall, the Center on the Hill, and now Cruikshank Chapel, embody our church’s commitment to the greater Chestnut Hill community.”

Over the next two years, the capital campaign to “Strengthen Our Foundation and Transform Our Future” will underwrite the renovation of the church’s kitchen and entrances as well as the installation of energy efficient windows.

"The new Burleigh Cruikshank Memorial Chapel has created a magnificent space for the performance of many different genres of music,” said Daniel Spratlan, the church's director of music. “While our sanctuary already provides a nearly perfect acoustical space for many concerts and services throughout the year, I am excited by the possibilities this intimate and flexible chapel space brings to our music program, and to the greater Chestnut Hill community."
