Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting Adult class is sponsoring a series of talks by Will O’Brien titled, “Sabbath Economics: Living God’s Abundance and Justice in Our World Today.” The talks will take place on Sunday June 9 and Sunday June 16, at 9 a.m. Both will be held at chestnut Hill Friends Meeting House, 100 E Mermaid Lane. Childcare will be available.

In a world economy dominated by globalism, consumerism, and corporate capitalism, are there any meaningful alternatives? How does our faith empower us to respond? In these two sessions, we will explore the various economic values, teachings, and practices of biblical Israel in the Hebrew Bible (continued by Jesus and the early church).

We will reflect on how these biblical values seek to nurture a human community of reverence, abundance, equity, and care for creation. We will discern the implications for our own economic and spiritual practices – as individuals, as communities, as congregations, and as citizens of the global economy.

Will O’Brien is coordinator of The Alternative Seminary, a grassroots program of biblical and theological study. He also works with Project H.O.M.E., a nonprofit organization, which provides solutions to homelessness and poverty in Philadelphia. For over 25 years he has been involved in advocacy on issues of homelessness and poverty.
