Next weekend, a nearly 20-year-old tradition at Germantown Friends School will continue with two nights of singing by a capella groups from a number of Northwest Philadelphia schools.

On Feb. 8 and 9, the school will host the highly anticipated annual A Cappella Fest, showcasing eight different groups over the course of the event.

The preview concert on Friday (7-8:30 p.m.) will feature the Penn Charter Quaker’s Dozen, the Baldwin B-Flats, the Temple OwlCapella, and the GFS A Cappella.

The main concert on Saturday (8-10:30 p.m.) will include the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy Hillstones, the Penn Charter Quaker’s Dozen, the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy Laurelei, the Keystone State Boychoir Grads, the Tufts Amalgates, and of course, the GFS A Cappella.

The A Cappella Fest has been taking place at GFS for almost two decades, featuring both high school and collegiate groups as well as individual performers, including notable performances by Bobby McFerrin and JD Walter, a progressive jazz vocalist.

“It’s exciting to watch other groups perform because each group brings its own energy to the stage,” said Dana Schulman, a junior and the first female beat boxer to be in the GFS A Cappella.

To conclude its set, GFS will perform a surprise medley, which is always a Fest highlight. Last year’s Fest medley ended with the group members spraying the director, Allen Drew with Silly String on stage.

“The group has a great dynamic,” said Schulman. “We have a lot of fun together and it shows when we perform.”

The Fest is the GFS A Cappella’s biggest performance of the year. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling the school at 215-951-2300.
