Samuel Shober Stroud, 83, of Lafayette Hill, a teacher and a former headmaster of Germantown Academy, died March 1 of cardiac complications following surgery to repair a broken hip at Chestnut Hill Hospital.

Mr. Stroud was headmaster at Germantown Academy from 1966 to 1970, when he resigned to return to teaching. Earlier he had been head of the lower school at the academy and assistant head of the school.

When he left Germantown Academy in 1970, Mr. Stroud returned to his alma mater, The Haverford School, as middle school math teacher, upper school history teacher and director of admissions. In 1980, he started his own consulting firm for students seeking placement in independent schools, retiring in 1990.

He served on the board of trustees of the Agnes Irwin School and was an active member of the Country Day School Headmasters Association.

Raised in Villanova, Mr. Stroud graduated from The Haverford School and entered the Navy, serving as a medical corpsman in the Pacific theater at the end of World War II. Following active service, he enlisted in the First Troop, Philadelphia City Cavalry.

He received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in history from the University of Pennsylvania, where as an undergraduate he was a member of Mask and Wig and Delta Psi.

He was a member of the Society of Colonial Wars in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, The Rabbit, Sunnybrook Golf Club, Hillsboro Club (Hillsboro, Fla.), Mill Reef Club (Antigua, V.I.) and Onteora Club (Tannersville, N.Y.) where he was on the All Souls’ Church Committee. He had been a member of the Philadelphia Club and the Philadelphia Cricket Club.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Judith Macy Chamberlain; sons William D. Stroud II and Samuel S. Stroud Jr.; a daughter, Susan Stroud Kleinfelder, and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services and interment will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 12, at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Pennswood and New Gulph Road, Bryn Mawr. A reception will follow at the church.
