Bernard J. Vaughan

Bernard J. Vaughan

Bernard J. Vaughan, 79, of St. Davids, formerly of Mt. Airy, a retired bank officer, died of cancer July 27 at his vacation home in Beach Haven, N.J.

Mr. Vaughan was director of investment research and a vice president of Fidelity Bank, now Wachovia, when he retired in the early 1990s. Previously he had been employed by Home Life Insurance Co. and PSFS, where he also had been a vice president.

He taught finance courses at La Salle and Temple universities and served on many professional boards. He was past president of the Philadelphia Securities Association and was vice president of the Philadelphia Bond Club.

Mr. Vaughan was raised in Mt. Airy and graduated from Roman Catholic High School. He was a graduate of La Salle University and served in the Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by sons Gerard, Bernie and P.J.; daughters Margy Norton, Bridget Diamond and Ellie Dishler; a brother; a sister, and 16 grandchildren. His wife, the former Peggy O’Toole, died in 2000.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated on July 31 at St. Matthias Church in Bala Cynwyd. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken. Memorial contributions may be sent to the St. Matthias Sanctuary Fund, 128 Bryn Mawr Ave., Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004.

 

Joan H. Poolos

Joan Heuges Poolos, 72, of Mt. Airy, a retired Philadelphia school principal, died Aug. 1 at Keystone Hospice, Wyndmoor.

Ms. Poolos served as principal of both the Levering and Sheppard schools after teaching in the elementary grades.

She was a graduate of West Chester State Teachers College, now West Chester University, and received her master’s degree from Temple University.

Ms. Poolos is survived by a sister, Floramae Force; a niece, Debra Canuto, and a nephew, Thomas W. Force.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill, 8855 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19118. Relatives and friends may call at the church at 11 a.m. Interment will be private.
