ObituariesMichael J. Kerlin
Michael J. Kerlin, 71, of Lafayette Hill, a professor of philosophy at La Salle University for the past 40 years, died of leukemia Nov. 23 at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. Dr. Kerlin, who had served as chair of the university’s philosophy department for 28 years, was an authority on the Catholic Modernist philosopher Maurice Blondel. He received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1986 and the Distinguished La Sallian Educator Award in 2006. Marc Moreau, the current chair of La Salle’s philosophy department said Dr. Kerlin had a “knack for transferring the affection students develop for him into a broader openness and appreciation for the larger world around them.” Dr. Kerlin, author of numerous scholarly articles and book reviews, spoke five languages and had some familiarity with a dozen more. He played Irish fiddle, pennywhistle and recorder, and frequently performed for his students. He received a bachelor’s degree in English from La Salle, a doctorate in philosophy from the Gregorian University in Rome and a doctorate in religion from Temple University. In 1988, at the age of 52, he earned an M.B.A. in finance from La Salle. Born in Philadelphia, the son of Michael and Mary McGinley Kerlin, Dr. Kerlin attended West Catholic High School and entered the Christian Brothers. During his time in the religious order, he was a teacher and debate coach at O’Connell High School in Virginia and began his professorship at La Salle. He left the Christian Brothers in 1970. Dr. Kerlin is survived by his wife, the former Mary Ann Williams; a daughter, Christine M. Nasser-Ghodsi of Chestnut Hill; a son, Michael D. Kerlin of Washington, D.C.; sisters Mary Theresa Kerlin of Drexel Hill and Ann Farren of Springfield, and one grandson. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at St. Philip Neri Church, Lafayette Hill. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. A procession for burial in Calvary Cemetery, Conshohocken, will form at the church parking lot at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Mary S. Sheppard
Mary “Polly” Smythe Sheppard, 78, of Wyndmoor, died Nov. 16 at Abington Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Sheppard, the daughter of the late T. H. Butler Smythe and Louise Ashhurst Smythe, was a graduate of the Springside School. She was a member of the Random Garden Club and served on the board of the Parents Association of Chestnut Hill Academy. She enjoyed playing tennis and squash and spending summers in Blue Hill, Maine, with her family. She had worked for a short time at The Baggage Room in Chestnut Hill. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Edgar Miller Sheppard Jr.; daughters Barbara Medved and Linda Sheppard; sons Edgar III and Richard; a brother, J. L. Nevill Smythe, and five grandchildren. Dino P. Rosa Mr. Rosa is survived by his wife, Lucille Oliver Rosa; sons Dean, Roger and Carl; a daughter, Luanne Suplick; a brother, Angelo; a sister, Eni Roman, and five grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Seven Dolors Church, 1200 E. Willow Grove Ave., Wyndmoor. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Jacob F. Ruth Funeral Directors, 8413 Germantown Ave., Chestnut Hill.
Dominic Affilani Mr. Affilani is survived by his wife, Mariona (Monaghan) Affilani; daughter Roberta Kennedy (Thomas); two granddaughters, Megan and Lori Kennedy; a sister, Anna Rita DelCollo; a brother, Joseph Affilani (Dolores). A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29 at Seven Dolores Church, 1200 E. Willow Grove Ave., Wyndmoor.
