ObituariesGeorge C. Myers
George Campbell Myers, 83, formerly of Chestnut Hill, died Sept. 25 at Freedom Village, a retirement community in West Brandywine, after a brief illness.. Mr. Myers, who retired in 1990 as a quality-control manager with the Container Corporation of America, was raised in Chestnut Hill, the son of the late Joseph and Helen Myers. The Myers were proprietors of Myers-Santman Roses, rose growers, in Chestnut Hill. Mr. Myers was a graduate of Chestnut Hill Academy where he was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball and baseball. As captain of the CHA football team, he was named “most valuable player,” after a championship win in which he played with a broken arm and leg. Later, at Brown University, he also was captain of the football team, which included on its roster a freshman named Joe Paterno. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II as a radar and communications specialist. Mr. Myers and his wife, the former Susan Elizabeth Wiener, were volunteers in the effort to save and restore the Fairmount Waterworks. After his retirement, he assisted in the formation of the CCA Retirement Association. He was a member of the Welcome Society of Pennsylvania. Mr. Myers was an accomplished golfer and enjoyed fishing and sailing on the Chesapeake Bay. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons George Campbell Jr., Jeffrey Cullen and Gregory Burchard Myers; a daughter, Laurie Campbell Myers, and three grandchildren. A brother, Joseph, preceded him in death. A graveside service was held Sept. 29 at St. Thomas’ Church, Whitemarsh, with interment in the family plot. Elizabeth Amoroso Elizabeth Cummings Amoroso, of Wyndmoor, died Oct. 21, at Chestnut Hill Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Ernest P. Amoroso; a son, Ernest Amoroso Jr., and three grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at St. Therese of the Child Jesus, 6611 Ardleigh St., in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia. Friends may call at 9 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
