AREA MUSICIAN HONORED: Justin Binek, head of the Vocal Jazz Studies program in the College of Performing Arts at The University of the Arts and a resident of Northwest Philadelphia, earned the President’s Award for Outstanding Teaching by a Junior Faculty Member at the University’s 129th commencement this spring. Binek directs the 12-person Jazz Singers and teaches jazz improvisation, jazz history, musicianship and applied voice. Binek is a jazz and classical vocalist, pianist, saxophonist and steel drummer who sings with the Voices of the POPS (affiliated with Peter Nero and the Philly POPS orchestra). GOING TO THE DOGS: The Montgomery County SPCA will hold its annual “Dog Day” on Sunday, Aug. 19, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Fort Washington State Park in the Flourtown Pavilion (West Mill Road). There will be lots of events such as therapy dog testing, agility demonstrations, photos, canine good citizen testing and more. All dogs must be on leashes.
