Penn bows to Northwestern dynasty

Mount St. Joseph Academy alum Chrissy Muller and Springfield High School grad Becca Edwards each scored for the University of Pennsylvania’s lacrosse team in last Friday’s national semifinal match at Franklin Field.

Unfortunately for Penn and its supporters, those were the only two goals recorded by the Quakers all evening, and they occurred in the last 17 minutes of the game. Northwestern University rang up the first ten points of the contest (eight in the first half), then a pair of Penn goals sandwiched around two by the Wildcats set the final score at 12-2. Muller, a senior, got the Quakers on the board with 16:29 remaining, and Edwards, a sophomore, scored with 4:46 to go.

Northwestern (21-1) went on to win its third straight NCAA title, knocking off third-seeded University of Virginia, 15-13, in the championship game on Sunday. After scoring a hat trick against Penn and adding a goal against Virginia, Wildcats senior Kristen Kjellman finished her career with a record 39 goals in NCAA tournament play.

Malvern tops CHA for Inter-Ac golf title
by TOM UTESCHER

With half of the scores recorded at last Thursday’s pivotal Inter-Ac League golf match, the Chestnut Hill Academy Blue Devils held a 13-stroke advantage over host Malvern Prep on the Friars’ home course of Waynesboro Country Club.

Mount medals twice in crew contest
By JAMES KEOUGH

Mount St. Joseph’s Academy kicked off the Memorial Day weekend in a big way, landing six boats in the finals at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America championships. The Mount would medal in two of the six categories, securing gold in the lightweight eight and silver in the junior eight, and finish fourth in the varsity and second varsity events.

CHA students make Elite One Hockey Squad

Two students at Chestnut Hill Academy, Ben Auerbach and Harmar Rappoport, were chosen to participate in the elite One Hockey AAA summer tournament. The tournament, which pulls in talented youngsters from the U.S., Europe and Canada, will take place in the end of June in Aston, Pa.

Auerbach, a fourth grader, and Rappoport, a fifth grader, both play for the Litter Flyers, a highly competitive youth hockey team.

Playing for the Little Flyers, according to Ashley Rappoport, Harmar’s mother, served as a good jumping off point for the two. Auerbach and Rappoport will play for the 96’ squad, a classification derived from the players’ year of birth, at the positions of goalie and defenseman, respectively.

CHA-Springside crews medal at Stotesbury
by TOM UTESCHER

Chestnut Hill Academy rowers in the lightweight double, Pete Miller (left) and Nick Turner pull away from the dock after receiving their bronze medals (the medals are obscured, but you can see the ribbons attached to them).

The Chestnut Hill Academy and Springside School crews each carried some hardware home from the nation’s largest high school regatta, an event that drew more than 5,000 rowers to the Schuylkill race course last Friday and Saturday.

Out of a total of nine boats that the sibling schools entered at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, four reached the finals, with Springside’s junior quad taking the silver medal, and CHA’s lightweight double winning the bronze.

The JV quad containing (stroke to bow) Carolyn Chisholm, Katherine Roberts, Julia Ryan, and Holly Bailey has been the Lions’ most successful boat this spring, winning the New Jersey State Championships and the Philadelphia City Championships. Last weekend the Springsiders finished second to a familiar rival, Conestoga High School, and one place ahead of an unknown opponent, Ursuline Academy of Dallas, Texas.

CHA lacrosse finishes with encouraging effort
by TOM UTESCHER

For an Episcopal Academy lacrosse team that has struggled in league games this year, the perfect opportunity to notch the first Inter-Ac victory of the season presented itself on May 15. The Churchmen were paying a visit to the Chestnut Hill Academy Blue Devils, who started their lacrosse program in 2005 and just started to play against varsity teams in the league this spring.

Local laxers stand out at national tourney
by TOM UTESCHER

Two Girls Inter-Ac League players, Emma Hamm of Baldwin School (left) and Colleen Magarity of Germantown Academy, will play for the U.S. this summer at the Women’s Lacrosse Under-19 World Championships.

As always, area lacrosse teams were well represented at the U.S. Lacrosse Women’s Division National Tournament, and in the 2007 event staged at Lehigh University last weekend, a pair of Germantown Academy players received honors of the highest order.

Senior midfielder Colleen Magarity was part of the 24-member U.S. Under-19 Team Training Squad that was undergoing its final audition session at the two-day tourney. After a full slate of games on Saturday, including an evening exhibition match in Lehigh’s turf-field stadium, Magarity learned on Sunday that she’d been named to the team that will play for the U.S. this summer at the Under-19 World Championships in Canada.

Her friendly rival from the Baldwin School, midfielder Emma Hamm, also made the squad, giving the Girls Inter-Ac League two representatives on the national team. The U.S. will be going for its third straight gold medal at the championship tourney, which is held every four years and this year will run from August 4-11 at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. The only other Pennsylvania player picked for the U.S. team is Radnor High School goalie Emily Geary.
