The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, Inc. has selected two Chestnut Hill Academy students to receive Gold Key Awards in its 2007 Scholastic Art and Writing national competition. Eighth grader Chip Wohlstetter (right) was honored for his painted self-portrait and senior Walter Wynne (below), for his etching entitled “Gossip.”
The Gold Key Awards are given for “exceptional works in a category” and represent the highest recognition given at the competition’s regional level. Regional Gold Key winners automatically qualify for the national Scholastic awards. This is the second year that Wohlstetter has been singled out for recognition with a Gold Key.

Twins at C. W. Henry receive arts award
The Kleiner twins know that talent in art is something they share. Seven-year old Devra and Matthew of West Mt. Airy, first-graders at C.W. Henry School, each have received city-wide art awards. Henry art teacher Evelyn Bock recognized the talent and submitted their artwork.
Devra received first place in the first-grade category of the Youth Art Month Exhibition Awards sponsored by Moore College of Art and Design. The competition was Moore’s way of celebrating National Youth Art Month in March. Three winners plus honorable mentions were honored in first-12th grades. Moore B.F.A. and post-baccalaureate Art Education students judged the contest.
Devra received a certificate and a scholarship to Moore’s Young Artists

Oak Lane kids cleanup Smith Playground

The weather was perfect and the kids excited as the kindergarten through sixth grades of Oak Lane boarded yellow school buses and set out for Smith Memorial Playground in East Fairmount Park. One of nine yearly community service projects, the trip’s purpose is to lend a hand with gardening, raking, and general cleanup on the grounds surrounding the facilities.

Springside Scores Well Springside middle school students excelled on the National Latin Examination, which is a worldwide test given to over 134,000 students from all 50 states and 13 foreign countries. In the Latin I category, there were six medalists: three gold and three silver. In the Introduction to Latin category taken by the seventh grade Latin students, six students received a Purple Ribbon, which is that test’s top honor.
