of an era for CHC men
In a sense, the conclusion of the 2006-2007 season ended the first chapter in the history of the Chestnut Hill College men’s basketball program. Jesse Balcer, who became the Griffins’ head coach when the men’s team was launched in 2003, is about to see his first class of freshmen graduate. His team reached the threshold of the NCAA Division III tournament this year, and now CHC will undertake an entirely new challenge, stepping up to Division II and gaining the ability to award dedicated athletic scholarships for the first time. At the start of the season, Chestnut Hill’s goal was to win the North Eastern Athletic Conference, thereby earning the team’s first invitation to the Division III tournament. By the beginning of January, though, a tough early-season schedule that included several Division II opponents had yielded a 4-7 record for the Griffins.
Mount
basketball advances in state tournament
In a first-round state tournament game played at Council Rock South High School, the Mount St. Joseph Academy Magic starred in a Saturday matinee that could’ve been called “Afternoon Of The Living Dead.” After going on a 10-minute, 19-0 scoring run that furnished them with a 32-7 lead late in the first half, the Magic thought they had their opponents well and truly buried, but the girls from Lebanon High School didn’t want to stay down. They chiseled a few points off the lead during the third quarter, then kept coming until it was a 10-point game (40-30) with five minutes left to play.
A near-perfect Record for coach Tom Myram
In his 12 years as head coach of the Germantown Friends School girls’ basketball team, Tom Myran has led his teams to the Friends School League playoffs 11 times. According to Myran, this year’s team is not comprised of only upper classmen, but includes one freshman and three sophomores who play alongside the four junior and four senior ballers. This Lady Tigers team “is really starting to bond, which will continue in upcoming seasons,” Myran said. He is thrilled to coach a talented group of young athletes, including one of the area’s top scorers, sophomore Nina Voith, who averages over 17 points a game. Myran of Chestnut Hill is one of the school’s veteran coaches. He believes that in a field where there can be a high-turnover, the longevity, commitment, and consistency of the coaching staff at GFS is important to keeping the program competitive. In addition to the varsity team’s 14-4 record, the JV team enjoyed a successful season with a record of 12-1. Susan Kinney, the JV head coach and GFS alum, is also assistant coach of the varsity squad, along with Sean Smallwood.
