Penn Charter, an all-male institution for much of the first three centuries of its existence, sent a girls varsity basketball team onto the floor against Springside School for the first time on February 6, 1991. Coach Dick Stobaugh’s fledgling Quakers squad defeated the Springside Lions in that meeting, 37-29, and since then Charter won every hoops contest between the two schools - until last Tuesday.

GFS boys squash vanquishes Malvern Prep

GFS juniors Brad Thompson and Zach Porges of Chestnut Hill play one and two on the varsity squash team.

The Germantown Friends boys’ varsity squash team had their most convincing win of the season beating Malvern Prep by 7 matches to 0. Only two Tigers dropped a game, with every other GFS player winning his match 3 -0.

In their previous encounter this season, GFS had to fight harder to best Malvern 4 matches to 3. This time, the Tigers were ready to apply what they had learned in December’s dramatic win.

In sweeping last Thursday night’s home doubleheader from the Villa Julie College Mustangs, the Chestnut Hill College women knocked off the top team in their division of the North Eastern Athletic Conference, and the CHC men remained in first place in their section of the NEAC.

The Griffin women won 71-64 to raise their conference mark to 4-2 while improving to 6-8 overall, and with their 76-70 victory in the second half of Thursday’s twin bill, the CHC men maintained their lead in the NEAC Southern Division with a 5-1 mark while climbing to 8-7 against all opponents.

Very quickly, host Chestnut Hill Academy found itself perched on the brink of defeat in last Thursday’s Inter-Ac League squash contest. The visiting Episcopal Academy Churchmen (3-3 overall, 1-2 league) won each of the first three matches to be completed (numbers three, five, and seven), and needed just one more individual victory to defeat the Blue Devils.

GFS girls roll past ANC in league clash
by TOM UTESCHER

The hoop girls at Germantown Friends School took their home fans on a 56-16 joyride last Friday night, as the Tigers breezed by the visiting Lions of the Academy of the New Church. The victory was a therapeutic salve for the Tigers’ egos as it followed a 53-42 loss to defending Friends School League champion Abington Friends earlier in the week. The win over ANC raised Germantown’s record to 9-2 overall and 2-1 within the FSL.

GFS blanks Lion squashers
by TOM UTESCHER

Last Wednesday Germantown Friends School’s racquetwomen completed a sweep in their home/away series against the Springside Lions. GFS had beaten Springside 6-1 in their first encounter last month, and in the rematch the visiting Tigers recorded a 7-0 victory that raised their season record to 3-0. That mark included a win over Friends School League rival Shipley School.

CHA basketball falls to Haverford School

Chestnut Hill Academy looked to snap their three game losing streak last Friday night, Jan. 12, against a dominant and talented (13-5) Haverford team, but fell well short once again with a final score of 47-65. Suffering another Inter-Ac league loss, Chestnut Hill now stands with a record of 7-9, and has been given a glimpse of a bleak future for the rest of their season if they can’t get out of the slump they have fallen so ungraciously into.

From the opening tip off, Haverford was in the driver’s seat, starting off the game with an 11-0 scoring run. Mark Justice was the first Chestnut Hill player to score, finally getting the team on the board. Shortly after, Maurice Young answered with two more points of his own, and it seemed the Devils were finding their rhythm, or at least were remembering the fundamentals of how to play basketball.
